I play Black Templars, about 1850 pts if I pushed it. Also Guard, but they're unpainted for now, maybe 1250 pts. I'm also one of like 6 Outriders for GW in the state, but our metro manager position has been closed so there's nto much in the way of support now. That, and with GW's ever expanding prices, and I'm starting to lose some love for the hobby. When I got into the game, a standard box of infantry, like a Tac Squad, cost $23. Now they're $35. Still, it is fun to play...
On the topic of wargames, anybody ever heard of Dogs of War? It's a modern-era skirmish game using minis, usually in fire teams. There are rules for special forces, airborne, vehicles, insurgents, soviet paratroopers, etc. Decent rules, need a little bit of ironing out, but a very fun game. Gives you much more freedom with your troops than does 40k. Take a look at
www.devildogdesign.com. Problem is, the company is going out of business, but you can get most of the rules for free online and you can buy figures from other companies, like Mongrel.
