Spam posts
« on: December 20, 2006, 02:18:55 PM »
The number of Spam posts are increasing (prolly the holidays...).

I know we had eliminated the post requirement because of the number of "junk posts", but by eliminating that, we've open ourselves to spam posts....

I suggest we go back to a small number of posts (perhaps in specific forums?) before any user can create their own topics. This would prevent most of the "Bot-Posts" that have been cluttering up the board.

I'd rather put up with 3-5 N00b posts from an interested party than be bothered with the cr@p from marketeers we're seeing these days.

What do you think?

It really bugs me.  It sometimes takes me a couple of seconds to decipher that it's a SPAM.

I don't even know how many new mortgages and miracle growth pills I've taken advantage of lately.  If it weren't for those "spam" posts, I never would have found out about them!

A question though, are new members required to post in that "introduce yourself" forum first?  I thought we at least kept that requirement.  It keeps the fodder posts out of the real topics but it also sets back some of the bots.

yes, but what exactly defines a small number of posts.

If memory serves me correctly, we *used* to require 10 posts before you could start a new topic. That, in some eyes, was excessive. I would imagine that 3-4 would be good - no so many that we'd be inundated with "garbage posts" like the old days, but enough to gauge if the poster is a spammer or not.

But what if people want to introduce themselves, or have signed up on the forum to ask a question?

I liked seanm028 idea were people have to post in the "introduce yourself" section first.

What sean said.  The spamming is getting way out of hand.
