.223 Ammo
« on: March 02, 2007, 08:42:16 AM »
I've been running low on Wolf .223 ammo.  Started looking around and buying some more.  Has anybody else noticed the price has skyrocketed in the last year.  I used to buy 1,000 rnds for $112 at the gun show.  Now its more like $170-$200 for the same ammo.

Yes, been watching the price rise for the last year. Been seriously considering reloading and/or getting an AK.

I feel so stupid when I am looking in the paper and see winchester ammo for $0.34 per round and thinking that it is a good deal.

I wish I could even find wolf .223, I was at sportsmans outhouse yesterday buying some 9mm, and they had NO 55gr. .223, or 62gr.  Was there 3 weeks ago and they had none then either. :(

8mm Romanian is so cheap lol. Prices will keep going up so long as people keep paying for it.

AK ammo has also shot through the roof.  Its gone from $75/1000 to over $160/1000

WTF!!

I'm going to see if I can get a bulk ammo order in and save some serious $$$.  I'll post if I do.

You guys might want to pool your cash and get a reloader. Seems like it would be a good investment.

It fuckin sucks because we have cases upon cases of M855 ammo here.  We have probably 1000 rounds of SAW ammo in the office at any given time.

I know that when I come home I'm going to have to buy that shit, and the prices have gone through the roof!  A reloader is definitely on my list of "things to buy when I get back!"

That, and I'm considering a nice 9mm AR build.

Here's a convenient way to stay on top of .223 ammo prices and availability.

http://ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=222888

Can't find it atm, but there is another thread with some nice graphs showing the price of .223 over time.

I just came from the gun show, where Miwall was there (thats who I used to buy my bulk .223 from).  They told me the price increase was due to "supply and demand" and no other factors.  People are just shooting more, and the production of ammo isn't keeping up.

I've been hearing from a friend at work who is an avid gun collector (he shoots Mausers and SKS's) that AK rounds are not coming thru in big waves to the US.  Where do you suppose all that AK ammo is headed?

The price of metals are up which causes an increase in costs to manufacturers. The future of mil surplus is also not too great with the UN pushing heavily for the cessation of import/exports of military ammo to the civilian sector.

It has gotten to the point that it is almost worth it to buy commercial ammo, unfortunately. Reloading .223 isn't terrible, but it is definitely more of a pain than, say, .45.

As for Wolf .223, it's cheaper (though not that much cheaper at this point!), but I find it to be slightly underpowered. Personally, I love Israeli .223.

Just thought I would give a heads up and say Wal-Mart (sad as it may be) has boxes of Remington in stock last time I was there.  $7/20.  That at least put it a little bit below the cost of Federal.
