I recommend going on-line, searching for and buying Army FM 7-8 Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=10689&hilit=battle+tactics

or visit that thread that i started with pretty illustrations.

Don't enlist national guard 11B, they'll fuck you in the ass in the 1/158. :P  :-#

The 158th is still full! when are some of you guys getting out so I can put people in there?

And nobody got the green weenie like the FA, we show up to drill and they say well its offical your all either 88M's or 31B's pick a line and hope you get the MOS you want.    =D>

Yea I have two 7-8s I think. Though, I've never heard it called the smart book, I always called it the infantry bible.

I wish I knew when I was getting out. I know a few people trying to get out. My contract ended on the 27th of January. They won't let me out. FA used to not get the green weenie. I heard they used to bring a case of beer into the field with them, in a big cooler, with ice(this came from a FA guy, but I'm sure this was a while back, probably early to late 90's). You know what I take out into the field? A water buffalo, with hose water, and it takes like the water buffalo. I also get MREs. You know what kind of shit I take after 3 days of nothing but MREs? A big painful one(even though they are the best shits i've ever taken). You haven't seen a good shit until you've had one with traction.

The 158 isn't fun. Doing battle drill 1A 100 times in the summer sucks. How about the one time that we were out Florence, and it decided to snow(though I was in CLS, I still would have rather been with my buddies)? What about the gay mission I just got back from? What about that time, despite being told that the Bragg shuts down in bad weather, we went out and did the squad assault range, and guess what, in the morning it snowed, and then guess what...thats right, we had no ride back to the barracks. You're very disillusioned about what is fun, and what is just sucking it up, and laughing it off with your friends.   I think you need some more time in the 1/158.

I've done my time, 4 years and a stop loss active duty Marine Corps 0351 machine gunner, F that. You guys go ahead and have a fun being NG 11Bees. I'm not disillusioned, but one weekend a month and two weeks outa the year sure as hell aint "living" it.  :)

I heard stories about the awesome old Arty days with beer and BBQ in the field, I never saw any of that. We just got S*it on, fire missions and move, every drill. Summer Camp at FT Sill or NTC in July.

When they MOB'd us and sent us to Ft Dix in the winter our Commander volunteered us to stay in the field an extra two weeks so we could help build a FOB. never mind it was 15 below and we were in tents with no heat, had any clue what we were doing, and pulling guard and wearing full battle rattle for no reason.

After 10 years 2 branches and 3 deployments I've learned, you can either love the way it sucks or wish it sucked more.  ;)

Oh and what I meant as a SMART book was the goofy issue one they give you at the MOB site. Its got alot of basic stuff broken down barney style, I wanna use it to train my PVT's in RSP. I have my 7-8 right here on my desk.

Good god people, I haven't been in the army that long, but the MRE's now are a MILLION times better than what was available from just 9-10 years ago.  Of the Gazillions of things there are to complain about in the military, we complain about MRE's?

Oh, and the biggest improvement in MRE technology in the last decade is that you CAN take a shit after 3 days!

well for some reason the omelet will never go away.....but the new ones aren't too bad, mind you i've only been in for about a year now, but its the Marine Corps, i spent forever eating MRE's from 2003 and sooner.  For some reason MCRD decided to stock pile on those, and i don't think ever got new ones.  Same with MCT they were so old...i think Pendalton threw out all of their old ones and MCT picked them all up and stock piles them like rats.

The omelet w/ham was always the land mine that nobody wanted.  I was always on the lookout for the spaghetti w/meat sauce.  Maple nut cake, mmmmm......

Maybe we should bifurcate this thread so that the MRE discussion doesnt take away from the legal issues discussion and vice versa ??

When I was in basic we still were eating fuckkin C-rats......  and we all got hardons when we found out we were eating T-rats in the Hondo that one year...
