Hiking spots near sedona/flag/anywhere within 4hrs from PHX?
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:35:03 PM »
Ok, before I drive home, my buddy is flying out to AZ for a week. So we want to do some hiking/shooting/fun!

I need some good areas to do some hiking (preferably areas legal to carry, but does not have to be), as in some awesome trails with LOTS
of scenery, mountains and all that AZ flavor. Looking for good places near sedona/flag/redrock and whatever else. Looking for places
within 2-4 hours from the phoenix area. Places legal to carry AND shoot are even more of a plus.

Directions would be cool. Or coordinates. I went to red rock/slide rock last august and I loved it, though I didn't get much time to do some trails.
Need to go out and buy some GPS now

My buddy has never been to AZ and I'd like to make it a good impression.

Thanks in Advance.

Jesse, weather permiting, try the Superstitions.
Less time driving, more time hiking. Take the eastside.
Carrying wise, I don't know the rules without research.
However the veiws are 100% "Arizona".
All you'll see in Sedona are pink Jeeps and hippies.

A Pink Jeep once stopped while I was coming down a rock in my Liberty and made me almost flipping a view on their trip.

Getting some mountain bikes and coming down Broken Arrow up in Sedona would be cool.

I will be bringing him to Supersitions also, but he wants to do some form of roadtrip out to northern AZ also.
And yah, I remember the pink jeeps, the one town I was in, thats all there was.

If it was an Evo, I'd say you guys should get crazy on the road to Tortilla Flats.

Just be sure to stay away from The Crack in Broken Arrow unless you know that your track on your off pavement vehicle is wide enough for it....

Jesse, how bout some of the off the beaten path local's? Well kinda.
Sedona is really beautiful just don't get caught up in the tourist trap.
If your looking to spend a couple days driving around, Flagstaff is still
somewhat unmollested but I'd recomend the back way up there.
Wickenburg, Congress, Prescott/PV than up through Jerome and Cottonwood.
You can keep going to Sedona than up Oak creek canyon to Flagstaff.
If you're not to burnt out swing out to Williams, it's kind of cool old Route 66 town.
That and it's home to the best dive bar ever, The World Famous Sultana.
Yes, that's really it's whole name.
Have fun.

Get way more money before then.

Advan A048s aren't cheap.

06 evos go for around 23k at the moment, in a few years they will be down a bit more. I'll put 12-15k down and finance the rest.

If you want a beautiful day hike, try Fossil Springs.
It's a little under 2 hours of driving (one-way).
Take the beeline/i-40 all the way to Strawberry.
You'll see a road labeled "Fossil Creek Trail" or something like that in Strawberry.
Turn on that road and follow it back till you see a sign pointing you towards the trail head (Dirt service road).

It's about a 2 mile hike down hill into a beautiful canyon.
There's a natural spring at the base full of beautiful wildlife.
It's a very diverse region due to the spring so it contains one of the largest concentrated number of diffrent species.

Bring your bathing suit if its warm enough!
Great place to swim. and get some small cliff diving! The water is crystal clear and maintains a constatn like 73 all year round due to it being a natural spring.
Bring lunch also as it is a FULL day event.

As for Sedona and broken arrow, that trail was dissapointing.
Beautiful but dissapointing in terms of challenges off-road.
It's similar to the Moab, Utah geometry (Off-roders mecca) but some-what of a let down.
We conquered Devil's Staircase like it was kiddy sh*t haha!

I also know of a lot more great hikes locally and out of town.
Pick my brain a little if that's not what you want!
Outdoors is my thang baby.

I recently heard of a new law prohibiting shooting in the desert during the summer dry season.  My source was unsure if it included National Forest land, but I'd take caution when shooting in the boonies until you find out the hard facts.

Payson has some good off-road trails, if you want to take your buddy up north a bit.  The Rim country stays fairly cool in the summer, too.
