I would like to start this post with a request. The same request we make a lot around here. Especially those of us who have been termed "grammar Nazi" and the like.

Please take an English Composition course.

Now, to answer your question.
Inexpensive radios work fine. Generally nothing fancy, but for airsoft, they are more than enough to at least get you started.
I know plenty of people that run $10 radios from walmart, radioshack, etc. I like the slightly more expensive ones (motorola and the like) because they don't break as easy, deal with rain/sweat/tears better and stuff like that. Plus, they have better battery life and usually a few of the bells/whistles that people love.

Damn Axis, I know you are used to getting pwned but don't cry all over your gear! That's a waste and you might as well give it to me!

I disagree here with Axis though, I personally think that the small gains you get from using a crappy radio (beyond LOS comms) are counteracted by the fact that you are stuck relying on a cheap 2 way. You are limited in headsets, have less radio channels, and IMO they lead to poorer quality comms. Static and interference really is an issue when you are trying to relay time sensitive data.

I think the cheap radios get you started. I started with them. How every if you are planning on playing airsoft for the foreseeable future save your money and get some good radios. Ebay is GREAT when it comes to getting good radios cheap. I have a set of cobras that have the maximum legal output with a TON of battery life (I've gone through 4 full day ops with one charge), Ton of channels and sub channels, memory, emergence weather channels. All the good stuff. I got 2 for 40$, retail 120$ i think from cabelas.

If you are gong to call someone out on their English usage, please check your own first. You overcapitalized, under-capitalized, had an incomplete sentence, had fragmented sentences, and misused a comma. Nothing pisses me off more then the same people shitting on the forum saying (rather 20 people saying) that someone else is shitting on it. You just add to the shit pile. If you guys have an issue, try PMing the individual or use the report post button instead of adding sometimes in upwards of double digit posts and further clogging up the forum. I've been here or nearly 10 years and the childish and arrogant corrections are getting very old. Everything you are saying is already in a sticky in the rules. To add, JFGI or anything similar was funny the first time... Now it's just waste of a post.

To the OP, if you decide to get a cheap radio, try to find one that has the ability to hook up a headset/mic. You will be doing yourself a favor by not giving away your position.

i would go as far to say that a headset is a necessity. depending on the game/AO, playing without a headset can be extremely annoying to your teammate that is trying to hide or employ some stealth in his movements..

oh and as far as compatibility, the wal-mart radios you refer to should work with everyone else's as long as they have multiple channels (i have 2 little cobras with 22 channels, they have worked at every game they were taken to) they dont have a whole lot of variety as far as headsets go, but you can get what you need at radio shack. dont buy the headsets wal-mart sells, they wont always work!

hope that helps you with your purchase if you decide to go that route.

This reminds me, if you can find a cheap one with sub channels those can be helpful especially a larger events where use of sub channels can be common. If you cant, no worries. a radio is better then no radio.. especially if that radio has a headset.

woops, i meant to include that. the radios i mentioned did have sub-channels. if you do get these kind, make sure you grab a model that supports sub-channels!

IIRC, the specific model we have can get you up to 100+ channels if you employ the sub-channels. they have security codes as well! i believe you can get two for $50..

The ones that dismount and I use are Motorollas. They work fine for what we use them for. The Pit is a large area and they work well for the most part. Coms aren't going to be perfect, ask those who have personal experience using military communications they will tell you the same thing. Unless you have the money to run UHF, the Motorollas will be fine for what we use them for and the areas where we play. Matt has 2, I have 2, and dismount has 2. If you want to borrow one I'm sure there are enough to go around. If you want your own that's cool too. Go to Sports Authority and see if you can get their display models, they will sell them to you at 10% off. Plus we are moving our games to Yuma Lakes(if you need directions let me know) it's closer to town and there is more challenging terrain than the pit there. As far as headsets go there are a wide variety to choose from as far as the Motorollas are concerned. They range from the simple earbud to throat mics and even have a military handset available in the 1 pin Motorolla configuration. Hope that helps. Besides you can easily spend over $1000 on some sweet com system but unless others are running the same setup you are hosed.
