Which piston?
« on: May 14, 2011, 11:14:48 PM »
So today my piston in my CA m14 stripped, and I was just wondering if I should go with a full metal teeth piston or polycarbonate piston? I am also going to put a m130 in it, with stock gears and maybe a G&P m160 motor.

SHS pistons are supposed to be good.

You don't need a full metal rack for an M130.  If you want, go for a piston that has half of the teeth polycarb and the other half metal.

Something like this http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/upgrade-part ... -blue.html

Make sure you adjust the AOE.  (angle of engagement, google it if you don't know what that is)  That will help prevent your piston from stripping again.

I second that. SHS are so strong and cheap just get whatever strikes your fancy (as typically they run out of stock very fast and you're forced to buy whatever is left). I've run both the half steel teeth and all plastic teeth versions in both blue and clear blue on sp120 which is equivalent to m130. Neither shows any sign of wear after tons of cycles. Also, AoE helps a lot, I have a A&K M249 with M130 on the stock piston and its been through easily 100k cycles with no wear.

Unless you're running M140/Sp130 and/or super high RoF I really don't see any reason to not use a standard piston so long as your AoE is adjusted.

P.S. CA pistons are utter junk, just about anything on the market except a systema will outperform them.

I think I'm gonna go with the SHS piston, which piston head should I go with?

Modify POM, Element POM/Orange, Element Black, Prometheus POM, and JG creme colored piston heads are good just to name a few.

That or any aluminum piston head. Honestly as long as you don't get a guarder or similarly flawed piston head you can't really go wrong. Just make sure you secure the piston head screw with some low strength thread lock as nothing sucks more than a piston head popping off and screwing up your mechbox.

Yeah you could go aluminum in the CA M14 gearbox, but there really isn't a reason to, especially if you have a sorbo pad.

Polycarb piston heads will be a bit quieter than an aluminum and will be easier on the gearbox shell.  (no reason to put unnecessary stress on something)
