Battery Dischargers
« on: September 27, 2011, 04:28:36 PM »
How important is it to discharge your battery? Can you just use a smart charger to charge it up every time and once you are done with it, leave it with a partial charge? Do you have to get a discharger or is there a free way to discharge your batteries safely?

Harmful heat in my hugs hide,My lips are laced with cyanide
Never mind my medicine breath,Come hither for a kiss of Death...
Where there once were feely fingers, Now protrude poisonous stingers
Feel I'm left with no recourse,But to kill her with no remorse

its been so long sence i'v used them I could be switched around here.

I belive i remember, that Nicad batterys dont have to be discharged,
And Nimh have to be otherwise they will just take a crap on your slowly.

Most dischargers are basicly just something too wear the battery down. I used to use a Old motor stuck in a vise, with a wire setup hooked to the motor, so i could just hook my batterys to it.
worked fine for me for like 5 years other then the high pitched whining from my Gun room.

SLINKEY has it mixed up NICAD batterys need to be discharged because they get memory, NIMH dont need to be discharged because they really dont get memory as easily, if you got NIMH dont worry about it

OP do you have a smart charger? If so, most of them have a charge/discharge cycle feature where it will automatically charge, then discharge, and then charge your battery again. If your batteries see infrequent use, then it is recommended that you do this once in a while to prevent the slow discharge from lowering your overall capacity.

But like xavier said, Lipos never need to be discharged, if they start holding less and less, then you should just get a new one.

NiCads must be discharged before long term storage. Store NiMHs however you want, but don't pre-charge it hoping to have a full battery by the time you bring it out of storage.

Lipos should never be discharged below 3.0v per cell, which can have a different level of charge for every battery. To deplete a LiPo is to do serious damage.
