blue finish on steel
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:23:19 PM »
well i didnt really know where to post this so im putting it in the general discussion area. Well i have recently started applying blue finishes to steel airsoft products mainly flash hiders because they are usually made of steel. if any one wants a blue finish applied to parts of airsoft guns you can contact me and we can go over the details. my Prices vary depending on how large the piece that im bluing is. this finish will only work on steel!! It takes time to get a perfect finish so expect a few days wait at least before i can get said item back to you. if your interested in having me blue finish PM me or just reply to this post

Are you sure you are really bluing. To actually blue metal you need  salts tank that run about 300 degrees, and requires a large area for the setup. It sounds like you are staining the metal rather than bluing it.

there are plenty of ways to blue metal i use a heat/oil bluing method though there are others such as cold bluing, hot bluing, Belgian bluing also know as hot water bluing. they all achieve the same general result (a rust proof beautiful finish) but my method tends to be the least durable but i find it brings the best variation of color depending on your amount of patience. With proper care the finish will last a long time (just coat it with alittle bit of gun oil every so often)

I'm not calling him a liar, I am a gun smith and do know the difference. I wanted to make sure he was bluing and not just staining the metal. Allot of people get it mixed up. When I worked at Robar we had a customer bring in a barrel for his national mach rifle that he said he had just gotten blued and was un happy. turns out the person who he payed to blue it only stained it and did not actually blue the barrel. Now that said I do not work for Robar anymore I work for my self thus I do not have a bluing tank to use so that is why I was asking these questions. If it is done right I wouldn't mind sending him a few barrels.

well trying show this finish on camera is harder than i thought >:( but here's the best i could muster at the moment... the flash hider from my kmp9 probably not the best example i will probably refinish it again but this does kinda show off the color youll get it looks black but under light in certain angles you get almost a rainbow effect. color finish varies from a light brown, dark brown, purple, purplish black, to this and maybe even darker

understandable im perfectly willing to explain my process if it was under question and its probably the most basic bluing method but gives very unique results from finish to finish. kinda my way of making alittle side money without taking to much out of my honors college work
