Former/current BMW owners....
« on: September 22, 2005, 07:05:49 PM »
I already have a deal or two ligned up on either a 2000 328i or a 2002 328i, and was wondering if any of you have owned any bmws, excluding sport bikes could give me some input on your thoughts of them.

Thanks

They're good cars, only faults are the resale value drops away after a few years.. German electrical systems are too redundant -too many relays make for a pita finding a problem... And parts prices are really high.

Repair parts are gonna hurt if you ever have to get work done on the car.  I have worked on BMWs in the past, seem to be pretty nice cars, but finding any kind of repair parts costs a pretty penny.  I rebuilt a complete 77(?) 320i in high school, it wasnt bad at all except for locating and paying for parts.  Seem to be good cars quality wise, drive well, and I have only heard of sparse electronic problems as Mooncruiser mentioned.  Parts just arent as readily available for them like they would be for a more popular (read: cheaper) car.

BMW's.... new BMW's...

Well... all biases aside (i never really have been keen on teens with luxury cars), they're nice... but if you or someone else screws it up, or someone else does, the repairs are going to cost well more than they would on a more.... normal... car.

Let me just pitch you this... Think about how many teenage drivers get into car accidents, at their fault or that of others, within their first year.  It's a lot (well over half).  THere are chicks at my school who have totalled 2 new beemers each, within 2 years.

Now, I am not judging your ability to drive (for all i know, you could be better than me), but just think of the consequences you might have to deal with if you F**k it up.  YOu'll be paying out of your ass for years to come (unless of course, mom and dad want to take care of thousand dollar repairs).

I have a friend who just got an '86 325i.... the thing has already cost well more than it is worth in repairs and such.  ANd not even at her fault!  Its just to way luxury cars like that go...

Go with a civic or something.  Besides, they get better mileage (and you know you want that... i would kill for a rice burner right now just for the gas expedature decrease).

A 98 Honda civic was my 1st car I bought myself, and it did great for the whole time I had it.  Parts were cheap (It got beat up a bit) and gas mileage was great.  I sold it this summer....Im in a 4Runner now...and boy do I miss the 30+ mpg.  If you are going to be at a school (be it high school or college) your car WILL take a beating in the parking lot.

Greg's first car was that ten year old BMW that he mentioned; it was pretty good. We now own two of them, my 2000 3231 and Linda's 2004 X5. They are the most bullet proof cars I've ever owned, run and run, go fast, handle great. Not a car you would take care of yourself, just not that kind of car. The scheduled maintenance is sort of a heart stopper but it's fairly infrequent. Dealer service is excellent. Older BMW's seem to be a good deal, better than most older high grade cars. We're certainly fans; I'll never own anything else.
Andy that's kind of a high grade car for a starter isn't it.

I owned two  BMWs. A   1979 German 320I straight 6 and 87 733 both car drove like a dream

Maintenance was high but at the time ALL my money went to my rides

I would look at whats available aftermarket ground effect, performace bolt ons etc etc

Have you looked into what insurance will cost you?  At your age, your insurance costs for a vehicle like that would be one of your biggest expenses.

The voice of reason.

Keep in mind busta, that no matter what you drive, you'll still be "busta cap."
