Mag Pouch Retention
« on: October 17, 2005, 10:03:33 PM »
I know I had a thread for this way, way back, but I would like to reword it. I was wondering what everyone thought the best retention would be. I would create a poll, but theres so many options. I just wanted some ideas, good ideas on what to do for retention.

An idea I had, that Ron and I shared, is like T.H.E. wallet, where you get the shark bite. It's a strong hold, and is silent as could be. But, it would need to be made for only one height of mag pouch. If it was made for real mags, it wouldn't have enough retention on airsoft mags, and vice versa. I know people like Christian, Matt and etc have good ideas. LET EM OUT!

I prefer velcro for retention of magazines.

I feel that with the way I carry my stuff, I don't need additional retention like fastex buckles or snaps.

Velcro is noisy, but not as noisy as the gun was that I'm reloading now.

If I've got something that I need to get at silently, I put it in a non velcro pouch.

Nate, on some of their pouches, Eagle uses an closure system similar to what you're talking about.

My favorite is the elastic. Nothing there to interrupt you from simply grabbing the magazine. But that definately has limitations.

For speed, open top with elastic to keep the pouch tight.

For security overall, I also prefer velcro.

For silence, use fastex.

Snaps blow (literally), and are difficult to do quickly.

Elastic over-the-top like the Low-Vis RACK is not something I like.  It is better than snaps like on a hellcat, but far from ideal.

I'd have to say Velcro lids are my favorite, and the best design I can think of.  For speed, you can tuck the lids (or remove them like on the STRIKE pouches) and run them open-top.

I agree with the velcro lids, but it is nice to have adjustable elastic to keep it tight too.

Only necessary on 3 mag pouches.

I've used pouches like that before and never could figure out WHEN one would have the time to cinch that elastic up.

The lid is either open or closed.  Open if you're getting a mag, closed if you're not.

I don't see the point for "extra retention".  Then again, I don't play inverted.

To me, the Eagle RLCS/MLCS dual pouch is as close to perfection as I've seen.  Webbing lids for durability, velcro closure, elastic strips to keep a single mag tight if you got them open-top.  I like the paraclete dual mags as well, but I'm not too sure about the elastic INSIDE the pouch.

A mag pouch is simple, it holds your mags and gives them up when you need one.  Alot of gear designers have tried different designs, some of them quite radical.  I see this as trying to re-invent the wheel.

I haven't used those R/MLCS mag pouches yet, but I enjoy the Paraclete version.  Like C-bone said, the velcro flap is either open or closed.  And when I do go open top its usually in a CQB/MOUT enviornment were I do not expect to be hanging upside down from a tree - the elastic retention works well enough for me in those instances, even with one mag in them.

Here is a prototype coyote tactical mag pouch. I will have the production models out after the game on the 29th. Should I call it the "Tarantula"? Anyway these are for Vince.

Agreed.  That's one out of the two things that I didn't like about the Low-Vis RACK.  All I did was just undo the elastic straps and found out it would work perfectly with magazines with mag-pulls.

Same here.

I made sure not to damage them, though, in case I ever want to sell it.
