Required Reading is Good!
« on: January 28, 2006, 12:06:16 PM »
As a new member to the Forums, I must say that reading of all of the, "Newbies please read", "Required reading" etc., was a boon.

Had I not read those posts I probably would have made almost every mistake listed in them!

Now.., at first I almost wore out the search button.  All of the topics and info was new to me.  So I read almost everything my searches brought up.

Recently, however, I have been having problems narrowing down my searches for more specific information.

So...., 2 questions;

Can any of you give me some advice on making my searches more precise?  I am no computer Guru, nor a user of many forums in the past.

Secondly;  Would any of you really knowledgeable members have the patience to volunteer to let me PM you any questions that I know should not be put up on the forums?  PM me if you would.

Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints about the forum.  Its just that there is so much information out there that I get sidetracked.

Or perhaps it is because of my A.D.D.....What was I saying?...I dunno, wanna go ride bikes?   Hehe

Be Well,
Phyrst

Not sure about the search, but, well, you can PM me any questions you have. I wouldn't say I'm "really knowledgeable" but I know a little about a lot of things.

Narrowing searches on this site is a bit hard, teh best advice I can think of is to try a number of different phrazes all meaning the same thing. When you are looking for information on a specific part such as a metal body for an M4; try "metal body", "metal upgrade", "full metal" or hope that it was thrown in with other info and just look for "upgrade". As for other general info by PMs look for who is giving the most info on a thread about a particular subject and send that person a PM, If the question needs a conversation type communication then invite them to a chat or AIM type engagement.

It is very refreshing to hear that someone actually researches and reads those stickys.  Im also glad that AA has such a wealth of knowledge on here. I personally feel that if a person honestly searched the topic and still has a question, I would want them to post the question.  The question may be a good question that has not been fully or even answered yet. For the search tips David gave some good tips.  I usually click on the search for all terms button and type in what I am looking for.  Otherwise you will get 500 results.  Also like david said, the topic may have several key words that you could try searching for.  Like "eye protection", "goggles", shooting glasses" or "anzi rated"  if you were looking for info on eye wear.

Thanks all!  Especially on the search tips.  I was going to PM people on what the meaning of certain abbreviations meant. i.e., SAW.  I am however starting to enjoy figuring them out myself.

I am aware that the military loves acronyms(sp?) and I can see why.  It saves alot of typing.

I can also understand why they they changed "The War Against Terrorism" to "The War on Terrorism".

Thanks again, and Be Well,
Phyrst

Abbreviations are best solved by a little google-fu and some help from wiki-pedia. Take what you do not know and search it there to see if there is a match for a definition. For instance: IYAAYAS

"IYAAYAS" is the slogan used by the AFSC 2W0x1, Munitions Systems Specialist (AMMO), career field in the United States Air Force. It is an acronym for "If You Ain't AMMO, You Ain't Shit!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IYAAYAS

or SAW

"A squad automatic weapon (SAW) is a light or general-purpose machine gun, usually equipped with a bipod and firing a 7.62 mm or 5.56 mm rifle bullet in NATO client circles, or in 7.62mm X 39 and 5.45mm X 45 in former Warsaw pact client circles. A SAW is used to provide suppressive fire for an infantry squad or section." Also see M249

If you can't find the answer to your arisoft question take it to google and see if it has been discussed on any other airsoft boards.

You know what is really odd? "SAW" in the AA search function comes up with zip.  I just thought to see what a new person would have to go through.

That is kinda surprising considering how many times that word has been posted here... however, many forums have crappy searches. Google works a WHOLE lot better.

Generic Internet Tip #1:
Type "site:a.url.here.com search terms" into google to use google to search within a single website. So while searching on AA for "saw" brings up nothing, searching google for "site:airsoftarizona.com saw" gets you 6,360 pages.

Among other things, D Bo.

The internet isn't the only source for acronyms. ;)

we should start a thread that is just a list of acronyms and tell what they are. But we would sticky it so all the new people would know what we were talking about.
